Abstract
Description
Asphalt stain has become a limiting factor in corn production in various areas of the humid tropics, causing severe losses in yield and deterioration of forage quality. For this reason, the objective of the present investigation was to determine the severity level of the asphalt stain in the corn crop under the application of different doses of sulfur. Enlensay was carried out at the Experimental Farm "La María" of the State Technical University of Quevedo, located at Km 7 via Quevedo - El Empalme. Six treatments were studied: T1: 0 kg ha-1 of S; T2: 12 kg ha-1 of S; T3: 24 kg ha-1 of S; T4: 36 kg ha-1 of S; T5: 48 kg ha-1 of S and T6: 60 kg ha-1 of S. The maize hybrid INIAP H-551 was used as genetic material. The severity evaluations were carried out using visual analysis and image processing with Leaf Doctor version 1.1. The results obtained allowed us to identify that Leaf Doctor can be used efficiently to determine asphalt stain damage in corn crops. The effect of the sulfur doses showed that the treatment with 48 kg ha-1 was the least severe (6.69%) in visual scales, while with the Leaf Doctor data, there were no significant differences. The severity of the disease was greater in the low and high leaves, with values of 9.82 and 5.48% for the first case, and 9.32 and 5.17% for the second case, for the visual scale and with Leaf Doctor, respectively. In the control treatment, a higher yield was obtained, with 8.95 kg, with a B/C ratio of $ 1.00 USD, translating into the absence of gains, with the other treatments economic losses were recorded.
