Abstract
Description
This research was conducted between January and May 2011, at the Experimental Farm “La Maria” of Quevedo State Technical University, located at Km 7 via Quevedo –The Splice whose coordinates are: 79° 47´ west longitude and 01° 32´ south latitude and 120 m. The local climate is tropical moist forest type, characterized by an average temperature of 25° C, annual rainfall from 1500 to 3000mm, relative humidity 83.5%, and 919 hours of annual average heliophany. The soil is clay loam, irregular topography and drainage and ph of 5.5 to 6.5. It was proposed as general objective to determine the level of production, flexibility and simple management of five corn hybrids, compared with three commercial checks in the area of Quevedo, Los Rios Province. The specific objectives were: 1) Select the most productive single- cross hybrids and show adaptability to soil and climate of the area Quevedo, 2) Determine the agronomic performance of the simple hybrid study, compared with triple hybrids, 3) Identify hybrids more resistant or tolerant plant health problems. Subject to the hypothesis: At least a simple hybrid produced in the area of Quevedo, has good adaptability and high yields of grain. Were available for a design of a randomized complete block with eight treatments and four replications. The plot consisted of four rows 5m long with a row spacing of 0.90m. All variables were subjected to analysis of variance and multiple range test of Tukey to 95% chance to tell the difference between the average statistics of the factors. The variables were: Days to male and female flowering, plant height, height to ear insertion, tar spot, red tape, Curvularia, Helminthosporium, Phisoderm, Roya, Acame of stalk, root, lodging ear length, number of rows per ear, cob diameter, cob uniformity, coverage cob, grain moisture percentage, weight of ten cobs, corn husk ratio, 500-grain weight, number of ears harvested and yield adjusted to 13% moisture (Kg/ha). In the days to male flowering hybrid AG-003 proved to be the later to bloom with an average of 54.5 days. Under the same conditions showed the same hybrid above at the female flowering occurred later with 58.5 days. The hybrid AG-003 had the highest plant height of 2.50 m. At the height of the insertion of ear the hybrid simple SV15-1 X SSD08-1 had the highest height 1.20 m. In the variable disease red ribbon, the commercial hybrid H-551 INIAP had the highest incidence with 2.00. About the disease helminthosporium, hybrid AG-003 proved to be more severe with 2.50. The hybrid single SM45-1 X SV35-1 had the highest severity of this disease with 2.75. The INIAP commercial hybrid H-551 had the highest root lodging with 3.92. In the variable length of cob hybrid AG-003 had the highest length with 18.59cm. The single hybrid (SV15-1 X SSD08-1) had the highest number of rows with 14.45. Under the same conditions showed the same hybrid with the highest ear diameter (4.88). The greater uniformity of ear resulted in the simple hybrid SM45-1 X SV15-1 with 3.25. The INIAP commercial hybrid H-551 had the highest coverage of ears with 2.00. The highest percentage of grain moisture was recorded in the hybrid AG-003 with 21.48. The hybrid single SV15-1 X SSD08-1 had the highest weight of ten ears with 1367.05g. In the variable weight of 500 grains the hybrid AG-003 reached the highest weight with 184.75g. The single hybrid (SV15-1 X SSD08-1) gave the highest yield with 8382.73 kg/ha.
