Abstract
Vegetation Index), GNDVI (Green Normalized Difference Vegetation Index ), GCI (Green
sobre el stack de índices calculados de cada imagen (86 en Landsat-8 y 85 en Sentinel-2);
coordenadas in situ y desde Google Earth Pro versión 7.3.4.8642.
Description
Remote sensing is very important in land management; therefore, new remote sensing
methods need to be tested in real situations. This research compared the accuracy of the
traditional remote sensing method, Maximum Likelihood (ML), versus an artificial
intelligence-based method called Random Forest (RF), in the detection of banana, cocoa,
and palm crops (and other land covers). Landsat-8 and Sentinel-2 satellite images were
used, which were downloaded from the USGS website; the atmospheric correction was
applied to the Sentinel-2 bands. The spectral indices NDVI (Normalized Difference
Vegetation Index), GNDVI (Green Normalized Difference Vegetation Index), GCI (Green
Coverage Index), and MSI (Moisture Stress Index) were calculated for the two images, and
regions of interest (ROIs) were created on the stack of indices calculated from each image
(86 in Landsat-8 and 85 in Sentinel-2); to make the ROIs (both for training and validation),
coordinates were taken in situ and from Google Earth Pro V 7. 3.4.8642. ML classification
was run in ENVI 5.3 software and RF classification was run in QGIS 3.22.7 with the
Dzetsaka plugin. The traditional confusion matrix and the Kappa coefficient were used to
validate the results; in addition, the Wilcoxon-Mann-Whitney nonparametric statistical test
