Abstract
El objetivo de esta investigación fue determinar la densidad de la madera de balsa (Ochroma pyramidale Cav. Ex Lam. Urb.) y su nivel de variación con la altura en árboles de plantaciones de 4 edades (8 meses; 1 año 6 meses; 2 años 7 meses y 3 años 2 meses). Para esto se tomaron 15 árboles por plantación a los cuales se les extrajo muestras (rodelas de 10 cm de largo) a diferentes alturas del fuste, ya obtenido las muestras, fueron sometidos a un secado hasta obtener un 12 % de humedad, una vez secos se calculó el volumen y densidad por disco. Para estimar la densidad de cada individuo se promediaron las densidades calculadas anteriormente a las diferentes edades. Los resultados mostraron que el promedio de la densidad de madera de balsa a la edad de 3,2 años es de 117,14 kg/cm3, mientras que a la edad de 2,7 años tuvo una densidad promedio de 129,74 kg/cm3, a la edad de 1,6 años presentó una densidad promedio de 118,17 kg/cm3 y a los 0,8 años de edad tuvo una densidad promedio de 136,15 kg/cm3. Para establecer el cálculo de desperdicio de realizó el aprovechamiento de los árboles, y toma de las variables dasometricas, se realizó el desrame y se procedió a trocear los a árboles a la medida de 2,60 m. Para embarcar, se cubicó la madera que se envió al patio de almacenamiento en Plantabal S.A. y se cubicó cuanta madera se obtendría. También se cubicó la madera que no usan o queda como desperdicio, que vienen a ser nudos de los árboles, esto para tomar en cuenta al momento que se realizó el cálculo de desperdicio de madera. Una vez la madera estuvo en el patio de almacenamiento, pasa al aserrío, para su transformación en listones de madera, aquí con ayuda de los maquinistas, se clasificó la madera en: madera que se aprovecha y madera que se pierde por desperdicio o defectos, dando un 88,36 % de desperdicio total de madera.

The objective of this research was to determine the density of the balsa wood (Ochroma pyramidale Cav. ex Lam. Urb.)
