Abstract
El bienestar animal en los últimos años ha adquirido cada vez mayor relevancia en todo el mundo, tanto así que muchos países y consumidores imponen exigencias legales y reglamentarias que determinan estándares de bienestar con los que se deben manejar los animales para comercializar sus derivados. El objetivo del estudio fue evaluar la percepción sobre bienestar animal en estudiantes de la Universidad Técnica Estatal de Quevedo (UTEQ). La investigación se llevó a cabo en la UTEQ, mediante la modalidad online debido a la situación actual ocasionada por la Covid-19. Se tomó como universo el total de estudiantes matriculados y para determinar el tamaño de la muestra se aplicó el Muestreo aleatorio. Se diseñó un cuestionario ex novo (Escala de Actitudes hacia el Bienestar Animal o AWA Scale) para recoger información sobre la actitud hacia el bienestar animal en estudiantes de la UTEQ, un primer tema incluyó las preguntas sobre conciencia sobre bienestar animal, además, se realizaron preguntas que se clasificaron en cinco componentes: 1: Maltrato animal por placer, 2: maltrato animal por desconocimiento; 3: Ocio con animales; 4: Los animales de granja y 5: Abandono de animales. Los resultados demuestran que los estudiantes de la UTEQ conocen el tema de bienestar animal pues sus respuestas corresponden a 4 (de acuerdo) en la escala de Likert, en la percepción de los estudiantes sobre el maltrato animal por placer y desconocimiento tiene una respuesta de 3 (indiferente). Mientras que en las preguntas sobre ocio con animales está representada con la escala de Likert de 2 (en desacuerdo) principalmente en las preguntas relacionadas con las peleas de gallos, perros y lidia de toros. Los animales de granja escala 3 (indiferente). En cuanto al abandono de animales alcanzó una respuesta de 4 (de acuerdo) ya que catalogan al abandono como una acción negativa, cobarde e irresponsable. Se recomienda brindar a los estudiantes de la UTEQ charlas o seminarios con expertos sobre el tema de bienestar animal.

Animal welfare in recent years has become increasingly important around the world, so much so that many countries and consumers impose legal and regulatory requirements that determine welfare standards with which animals must be handled to market their derivatives. The objective of the study was to evaluate the perception of animal welfare in students of the State Technical University of Quevedo (UTEQ). The investigation was carried out at the UTEQ, through the online modality due to the current situation caused by Covid-19. The total number of enrolled students was taken as the universe and random sampling was applied to determine the sample size. An ex novo questionnaire (Scale of Attitudes towards Animal Welfare or AWA Scale) was designed to collect information on the attitude towards animal welfare in students of the UTEQ, a first topic included the questions on awareness about animal welfare, in addition, they were made Questions that were classified into five components: 1: Animal abuse for pleasure, 2: Animal abuse due to ignorance; 3: Leisure with animals; 4: Farm animals and 5: Abandonment of animals. The results show that the students of the UTEQ know the topic of animal welfare since their answers correspond to 4 (agree) on the Likert scale, in the students' perception of animal abuse for pleasure and ignorance, they have a response of 3 (indifferent). While in the questions about leisure with animals it is represented with the Likert scale of 2 (disagree) mainly in the questions related to cockfighting, dogs and bullfighting. Farm animals scale 3 (indifferent). Regarding the abandonment of animals, it reached a response of 4 (agree) since they classify abandonment as a negative, cowardly and irresponsible action. It is recommended to give UTEQ students talks or seminars with experts on the subject of animal welfare.
