Abstract
Description
The study of vegetative growth and the need to supplement nutrients to maize has become an important factor in the country's commercial production, constituting one of the limiting factors of production. The objective of this research was to determine the partitioning of biomass and nutrient uptake in three maize hybrids (Zea mays L.) in the central zone of the Ecuadorian littoral. This investigative work was carried out in the experimental farm "La María", premises of the Technical University of Quevedo. For the development of the research, a completely randomized block design (DBCA) was applied with three treatments and seven blocks or repetitions. All variables analyzed were subjected to variance analysis and Tukey's test (p> 0.05) was used. For the effect of the statistical analysis, the following variables were used: total dry biomass, biomass accumulated in stem, leaves and ear, accumulation rate of dry biomass stem, leaves and cob and nutrient absorption. According to the results obtained in the research, the DK-7508 maize hybrid leads in terms of the total accumulation of dry biomass. The biomass depletion rate in stem and leaf allowed a greater size of the cob; However, it was possible to know that the hybrid DK-7508 has a delayed biomass depletion (after 60 days), an important characteristic of hybrids of high forage quality and low grain quality, compared to hybrids UTEQ-101 and INIAP-H551, who started the biomass de-accumulation process after 40 days. On the other hand the nutrient absorption was higher in all the studied hybrids, so this indicates that to obtain high yields, it is necessary to choose a contralada fertilization according to the soil analysis, meeting its specific needs.
